DELUXE VERSION OF WORST CASE SCENARIO ALBUM

Universal Music and Island Records will be re-releasing dEUS’s Worst Case Scenario on December 4th 2009. Originally released in 1994, Worst Case Scenario is considered as a brilliant breakthrough album (300,000 units sold in Europe). It incorporates a wide variety of styles, including pop, folk, free jazz, noise rock and this album made them the most successful (and influential) Belgian rock band ever!

The album will be released in a Deluxe version, consisting of two CD’s and a DVD. The original version of Worst Case Scenario has been re-mastered in London at the Metropolis Studio under supervision of Tom Barman (front man of the band); this is CD1. The second CD includes their first EP Zea (very rare) and a collection of B-sides, unreleased lives tracks and demos.

The DVD is a brand new documentary about the making of the album + Unreleased live performances recorded in 1994 and 1995.

A 24 page booklet with liner notes packed with new information, pictures and other memorabilia and liners notes from Mark Paytress completes this Deluxe edition.

Ha ha… Hum Hum Festivals… So many good memories. Of loads of them. From the teenage kicks aka puberty and bleeding ears to the professional mayhem that can occur during a quick change-over (you’ve got 15 minutes (to fame ?), boys, always shouts the big man from the left stage corner…wearing shorts), to the greatest musical experiences and accidental discoveries that can happily and accidently take place. That’s why we’ve got ears, don’t we ? And taste. And why we are there, to put it simply. From truly disgusting food to improvised BBQ with other musicians (and tents burning, by the way) to never ending talks and laughs with many other from out-of-space(s) band members. And more, if there’s affinity. Still is, if you stay open. And use and abuse of your social skills. So many festivals travelled. Experienced. Tasted. And sometimes approved. With or without dEUS. Muddy it used to be. Still is in the UK though. But everywhere else ? It has become so well organized. An event, they call it.

dEUS did a lot of them a couple of years ago. And even more so over the last decade. Countless ones.
Let’s get back to their one and only holy gig during their sabbatical live year 2009 … – GIGS, sorry : Yes, they played twice, two nights in a row in the comfy of the Marquee, 2 completely different sets, about 28 songs were played…-by the way who has ever played 28 songs in a festival I ask myself ?…Except The Ramones, of course. Maybe. And Mauro, I guess, but that must have been at some kind of arty festival. Probably. And the Buzzcocks. And. And. No, not Adam and the Ants. They didn’t even have enough songs I guess.

Stop it. Rewind.

So our very own little d’s did it in style I dare say. And write. A few friends joined them on the first night. Credits are…there, somewhere, if you look through this… and finally deserve it. Old songs and new songs were played. Mashed up, as another famous Belgian band would say.
The second night was more direction intimacy. When songs truly matter. Where deep meets high.
Both nights, were, objectively, soulful, powerful, sexy, clever, sharp…and groovy. If you ask me.
Both nights were with extra musicians and forces on stage. A gorgeous feminine choir of four joined the party. And a multi-instrumentalist added his touches and sometimes personal views on the existing music. Printed them even. Credits, are also available. If you dig for it not so deep down. Here, somewhere, again.

I honestly think, after those two nights, that very few other bands can offer so many great tunes, different tastes, different shapes, different feelings, different approaches, different cleverness, different grooves, different melodies, and….evolving talent …other than dEUS.
Of course a few others are on my A-list, and luckily. Otherwise it would be very gloomy.
No names. Everybody has rights to the secret gardens.
And it’s great to play a home match. Twice. You know, between friends, new and old ones kind of feeling.

But I also think that dEUS needs new horizons. To expand them. New audiences to play their music to. New challenges. New history. And affinities.
From now on when I think of festivals, and dEUS, I think, for instance, of Coachella, Lollapalooza, Big day Out, Rock in Rio, Summer Sonic, Fuji Rock, Tomorrows Parties, Finch …countless others, an endless list. Katmandu would also do. Hong Kong too. Vostock would, and Ushuaia too.

Name it dear readers. And interested/ing human beings.
They’re your countries. And powers.
Read it. Share it. Peer it.
Knock on promoters doors.
And make it happen.

We would love to. You would be delighted. I swear to gOD.
Let it be. We’ll be your proud guests.
Let’s shake the planet. In 2010. Or 2011.
We let you decide.
As long as we meet.
And finally greet.

I don’t really read them in English.
Books that is.
Hum.
Sometimes gossip, architecture, design… comics magazines. TV guides, politician speeches…. Even gloomy scientific tricky news that gets the opportunity to be widely published is good for me. ABCD.
All that beautiful math and senses can be found in, let’s say, Shakespearean love letters. But books ? No. Never. Well, almost never. Don’t ask me why. Maybe I’m just lazy. Maybe I’m scared of losing some true meaning of words. Maybe I’m lefty brainy dead.
Probably.
But I do remember a book I read ages ago. In American -wanna be smart- English. I still know it by heart. Almost. Even though I haven’t physically seen it … since Man created Women, or something.
Don’t shoot me lovely/cute/sexy/clever Ladies. We all know the truth behind this sentence. Ohhh yes.
As I said, I vividly remember a book. gOSH ! One book.
A Henry Rollins book this was.
Get in the Van. And in there, at some point, when you almost called it a day, letting your dreams go by, was a story going something like this :
<< Last night we played Seattle. Show was real good I thought. One of those that leaves me fucked up and incoherent. Before we played, this boy came up to me with this nice looking blond haired girl. He gave me a Magic Marker, lifted her shirt and said, << Sign her >>. I looked at her body. She was very fine, perfectly muscled. I looked in her eyes and asked , << where do you want it ? >> << Where do you want to put it ? >> she replied smiling. I gouged her in the face with the marker. She did not << want it >> there. I moved to her stomach and drew a swastika with the word << fool >> underneath. The boy walked away. She said, << Can I have a hug >>…I said…

Hold it there for a second. Please. The end of the story is not gonna be told. It’s up to you, dear readers. Up to your creative minds and spirits. If you know, great. If you don’t, even better…that means you can imagine what you want the story to be. To become.

What the hell does this have to do with a dEUS podcast do I hear you all say ? Well, I think, that, depending on the ending you have decided to deal with, you might experience a pretty close true << vibe >> of what a musician might feel during a studio recording session. Who will he be ? The mistress, the man, the lady, the wife, the lover, the student, the architect, the whatever.
Or will he just stay true to himself ?
Having had the commonly agreed privilege << for a band's soundguy >> to hear the new dEUS demo stuff let me tell you: they have chosen .They have decided. They dare to stay …themselves.
Whatever that means ha ha ha…

Wait… hear. See… decide. Wait some more… enjoy. Somewhere in 2010 the truth will be revealed. Will it be Henry’s ? Will it be a lady’s dream ? Will it be some cute guy ’s nightmare?
Let’s just pretend that it will be quite unique…as everything this band has delivered in the past.
Gimme me a match, please.
Or Gimme the heat.
Anything, but an Emir Kusturica gig. Or a white belly. Or a headline spot at a the Vatican city festivalitis arthritis.
For those of you living (and actually not leaving it, yet) around the low countries you know we have a date : Pukkelpop, somewhere end of Augustus. In Belgium. If politicians still don’t mind it to be named that way.
Some truth could be revealed there. Hopefully it will be, and even become a virus. And some past beauties will be unleashed, brought back to life as well. If you’re smart. If…maybe. But if, as seen on TV as they say commonly, Mister Obama himself can catch a fly, I’m sure dEUS can imagine and create new species. Just for the sake of it.

15 years. 15 ways to celebrate. And see through the future. That’s the main thing for artists. That’s why/what they live for. That’s why we love them. Past… present.

I know that, right now, Tom is dealing with a deadline going through his never ending teen mind: he has been asked to write an article about Michael Jackson’s death last night.
Will it seal some kind of future ?

Hum…wouldn’t bet a horse on it.

Tomy pretty much completed the new Magnus (with CJ Bolland…and Tim VanHamel) opus while we were still recovering from the New Year’s blast we had (took me a month and a half this time, pfffff).
I know Mauro did about 50 gigs with different projects, from free jazz to monstrous DJ sets, via the Grooms and through a lovely hell, I guess. One of which saw him spreading his poetry in front of an audience for the first time. His very own book should pop up pretty soon.
Bang on your favorite literature store, or door. Flanked by the great Ramsey Nasr, I wasn’t too convinced at first but I’m sure the project evolved smoothly after the opening night.
Sorry Mauro, wanted to ask you for tickets for a later performance, but life kept me away from the meaning of…stage life, I guess. Loved your poetry. Truly. And both characters.
Stef stood on the producer chair for the new Pornorama record. And did the same, while drumming, on his new project (again, featuring the one and only Tim VanHamel, apparently back from…never been gone. Thank gOD) : the Disco Drunkards. And of course took care, between two holidays, of his lovely new born little sunshine.
Klaas was, I guess, looking for action. Or reaction. Hum hum. No. No. This is not one of Andersen’s << Garden of Paradise >> stories, nor a fairy tale happening, but he also became a proud father (my space generation, that’s how you call us, innit ?) for the…third time. Nice one Bros.
Alan, in the meantime, did play some very complicated, greatly skilled music. Talented musicians we needed, when scoring in front of a very << know about >> music lovers, and other connoisseurs. Musicians uber alles. Or is it united ? Nice one anyway.
After that he decided to put a new life in his used but still perfectly shaped strings on a few Brazilians beaches, for weeks. Poor turtles, I know he loves chasing you.

Now you know what happened.
But this one is about the future.
You’ll see musicians working, friends joking, and life lovers in action. Even if sometimes, movies, and podcasts, don’t truly reflect …the action. This one suggests, more than shows. That’s why this one is, I think, for the true fans.
You’ll get a glimpse of a very own extravaganza show here in country Belgium. Humo’s Pop Poll. Which is huge here. The magazine. A very influential TV weekly. Just so u know. Dear (sometimes) lucky people of other latitudes. What/where ? Who cares.

As long as you have a couple of roll up papers around you and some forbidden delights to be mixed inside the tobacco…I know it will all come back to you. And in a very poetic way for some. In a much more paranoid one for others. You choose.
One thing is a virus, and it’s the truth.
And the truth is : those three Paradiso gigs will stay, and last forever, in « everybody’s weird » minds that were there to witness them.

The Tripod is a great venue. And I’ve done it a few times. But this time I wasn’t too happy. Don’t know why exactly. Not enough beauty in my mix. Poetry, even, maybe. I thought it was too…much, simply. But you, lovely folks, didn’t seem to care (or notice) and gave us a hell of a great time.
It’s still something to see smiling faces after a gig.
It adds value to your job. And art form.

London, on the other end, is…London.
Massive and delicate, huge and simple, cute and ugly, smart and dirty, cool and stressful, weird … and so predictable at the same time.
Just like the venue we played. The Koko. How demented were our grand fathers to imagine such places…and actually physically build them. Scary architecture. Stairs that never lead you to where you wanna go, countless rooms and rumors are still spitting off the walls. You never know who did what in venues like this…in this city.

Countless pictures of rock stars (do they truly exist, actually ?) are re-dressing the lovely green room. You have a good old PacMan there, if you’re bored. Or a Kicker. Or a huge screen with a play station hooked up for the Nintendo generation. And, eventually, a stage in the middle of the place.
I dare to say that dEUS took it…by storm. I think it was their best London performance in a while. And I hope you will agree.
And, ho, what a pleasure to meet familiar faces after a gig. Even though we had to jump on the bus right after the gig, those little chats and moments are…priceless.
So, will dEUS have their picture on the walls ? I don’t know, and I honestly don’t care, because I don’t believe in the music hypes and venerations… but, between us, they deserve it. Damn right.

Please have a Guinness, or a cup of tea, or a sandwich, or a fag…take your seat away from the day light, throw the cats away for a few minutes, forget about your bills, open your laptops…relax…and enjoy dEUS pod 13.

Vox Populi Haider, who died the way he supposedly lived ? Surely not.
The food ? Hum hum.
The beautiful remains of the Austro-Hungarian Empire ? Sure.
The mountains, the skiing and Vienna itself are world class destinations.
But mostly the people, strangely. Thanks guys. You made it worth the day.

Where were we before that ?
Gosh, of course, in Kafka land. And a revolution-evolution land. Franz is simply my all time favorite writer. Not that you should care, but I’m writing this, so do you mind if I share my love for this unique writer ? His « museum » is not worth it though. What a shame. Top 5 on the « not to do »  list as a traveler. Just go all the way down the unique old streets to the river, get a coffee…and open a book. The book you may call it. Life will find its way versus time. Promised.

Anyway. Prague was, personally, one of my favorite gigs so far. Musically speaking, and in Tom’s voice, it had something. Truly. Wish you had been there. And a day off in one of Europe’s most important cultural cities is always welcome when you tour about 8 months a year. Even the food was great this time. I had such bad memories of it. Last time I was there was with CocoRosie, we ate in a joint in front of the venue we played. Don’t ask me the name, but please let the dogs in. They won’t even look at your plates. Thanks to my lovely girlfriend instinct (and smiles, yes, she was there, but that you truly don’t care about), this time we went accidentally local, opened warm doors and found…great smiles and smells. No absinth craziness this time tho. Two years ago we had a blast in a small bar somewhere in the old town. Came in as enemies, but ended up best mates with the locals. What a great memory of time sharing with a band…that you might also call friends. It’s not that usual in this business, trust me.
Anyway, guess I’m getting a bit old. The band isn’t, trust me. Always there when it comes to parties. Ohhh Artists.

After that we went to Switzerland, Lausanne. Chaplin, Simenon, Franklin and countless other celebrities made it their home. It’s lake, it’s stylish millionaires (one in 39 Swiss is..a millionaire I read in the news – can you believe it – I did the trick of counting the people on a square and guessing which of them might be the lucky one – funny game if you ask me)…and it’s damn mountainous streets. Alan, Stef and Klaas rented bikes and went for it. You should have seen their faces when they came back, ha ha ha. Also a good gig, by the way.

The city of Basel has more appeal to me. Less money, maybe. But much more « spirit » I think.
And finally we went back to Germany, Cologne. But that you’ll get (briefly) in the next one.
In the mean time please have a look at…hum, let’s call it…humm…no idea.
Vienna, I guess.

Luckily enough, for the believers between us or proud parents as they call it on my space, we’ll enjoy a day off home when the lovely (and expensive) Sint Nicholas will be finding his way to your chimney. By the way, and between us, one of the Antwerp Fab 5 will become … one proud parent for the first time, somewhere in November. Let the « stork » be nice to them three, yo.
15 European countries will be visited on this last Vantage Point lap. About 40 gigs. From huge ones ( home grown Forest National ) to smaller and never visited before countries (Finland). A lot of blue skies and some snow would be nice, to compensate the never ending hours spent in dark, but less and less smoky venues. Even in India and Thailand we can’t smoke in parks nowadays. Are we all becoming Californians ? com’on, wake up people !
Anyway, September was nice. Back to school and all that. Some kind of holiday. But not for them. Not for dEUS. They were hooked-up in their studio most of the time. Working on new material. Jamming, as they say. You will hear and enjoy one or two of their new ideas if you come down to the gigs. « Dark sets in » has already found its way on the net. Keep looking. So much better in true live conditions then via a phone lens though. If you ask me.
We are now sitting in lovely and sunny Vienna. Austrian Indian summer is not a myth, apparently. Helsinki, Copenhagen, Berlin, Hamburg and Prague were good gigs. Good crowds too. And cool cities to keep coming back to.
The set list, is, I think, their best one so far on this tour. It’s powerful, delicate, impressive, tender, sweet, sexy, groovy and above all… smart. It combines the best of their musical history… and the future one. And we all know how rich it can be.
So, after about 30 audio podcast about this unique band, it looks like more and more that I’m turning the adventure into…a vodcast one. Hope you don’t mind. And still not sure what the future will bring us on this matter. Didn’t I hear a while ago something like « video killed the radio stars ».

From the ruins of heavy duty / hard worker former East Germany (Melt festival: beautiful setting – strange line up – bloody rain – cool Editors – nice food and, yeah, a damn good gig  – I will not say this anymore, because it seems to me obvious that dEUS has found its cruising capacity to play a bloody good gig every time on this lap) to the weird sunshine and clean surroundings of the Latitude festival somewhere in the English (and Posh) country side. From the Swiss mountains (and chocolate strangely mixed with Corona’s) at the great Paleo Festival to the even better Parades de Coura festival in Portugal (Tomy’s number one gig so far, and surely a great meet and greet / hell of a party afterwards) . From the best swim – and see – ever (and trust me, I’ve done a few) at Leucate (South of France) with the holy Sonic Youth to the Sicilian inner land at the cozy Ipsigrock at Castelbuono (lovely old town – great antiquarians, shoe sellers and ice creams to be found and celebrated there). From the discovery of Romania (and Bulgaria… only by sightseeing, while travelling) and the way they still look at the meaning of life… the « old Europe », reaching towards money and Starbucks coffees but still easy, a bit dirty, a bit rough, and still having some kind of unexpected but so welcome gently decadently HUGE parties on the beach (isn’t it what they are made for « New United States of Europe » ?) while they last (…or should I say until the last man alive… collapses ?) to, to my opinion, their best gig so far: Lowlands, in the Netherlands…

I forgot to mention a few; including the last one, Rimbaud’ ghost having had a re-action on Tom’s voice…eating it up alive and having to cancel the gig at Charleville-Mezières.
« Illuminations » (my personal favorite) he called it.

We called it a day…for the festival circus.
But what a nice circus it was.
So much has been done, so little has been said by your servant, myself.
I had it all, on my laptop, but the old man (hey, since when does a computer have…a sex ?!?) was tired and collapsed while on duty (no, not in Romania…even though it would have made sense) and physically…died in front of me…taking all his memories / actualities and exclusivities with him… somewhere nice I hope, ‘cos gosh I loved him.
Then by the time I did get things back to normal, my oldest son (but not old at all even if he thinks so) decided to become a photographer, while I was gardening, …and erased all the movies (something like 20) I had done.

That’s why folks, Ladies and Gents…it took me so long to get back to you and give you something a bit « special » about dEUS.
Sorry.
But I know that the people who were there will revitalize the moment by a glimpse of their eyes. For those who were not there we have an extensive European tour comin’ up (October/December) to get a chance to enjoy the same glimpse.

So, what’s on this one you will ask: well, I’ve asked Klaas (violin-keys…and marathon man in the vodcast) to dig in (and share with us) his pictures.
I‘ve also asked Steven (assistant T/M) to empty his phone and let me work on the few films he had done. And found a way to get a copy of some recording of the (amazing, both sides: audience/musicians) Portugal gig. And tried to make something new out of it.
I did try to edit it, and here you will find the result. Don’t forget: it’s still really new to me … this video thing.
It’s quite different (even the song structure is different -) but I hope you like it…as a tribute to all of you who gave us a great summer… and to all of you we will meet again later this year.
And as a teaser of what we will try to get you this autumn.

Keep smiling to your golden fish, keep listening to your best radio station (if you’re an internet radio listener, here is a tip: WFMU New York is a clever/groovy/sexy one) and why not: listen to yourself and the sweet smell of silence…sometimes.

It is obvious between them. And it is now obvious when shit happens behind their will and control. All the Torino city micro-waves must have been turned on at the exact moment they went on stage… and the power went away. As we all know, Italians like to cook. Again and again. So did the power too. Disappeared. And not the gentle way. And again… and again. 4 times before they called it a day. But it was… a magical evening. They kept playing. Even acoustically. Singing their guts out. You could have heard a bee passing over the festival field, that’s as quiet as the audience was. To live the moment. To live through the moment.

It doesn’t take away the frustrations those kinds of gigs leave us with, but, I’m glad I was there to witness this moment of shared illusions…and disillusions.
Memory of a festival…as Tom named a song quite a long time ago. Check « In a bar, Under the Sea ». For your pleasure, also. Again and again. Again.
Ferrarra didn’t have the magic it had two years ago. And as you’ll hear on this pod it is still extremely vivid in some of the musicians minds and memories. But does magic knock on the same door twice? We double billed with Interpol. And that may be the reason.

Roma, la bellissima, was what it had to be: a gigantic party. It’s always nice to see people getting of their chairs, forgetting who they are and who they pretend to be (don’t forget: we’re still in Italy – where looks…kill) …and dance the night away. So they did. And so will we.
Let’s get the ghetto blaster, put a nice Jorge Ben…or Polly Jean Harvey, if you feel lucky.
Italy, thanks for those shared moments.
And keep cultivating good taste. And the food. And the weather. And the culture. It doesn’t hurt.
But fix that damn fairy electricity.

Ireland has always been good to dEUS. They even had a real hit over there with « Little Arithmetics », you know, a true one, sung along from butchers to shepherds, from students to lawyers, and it’s always a pleasure to visit such a lovely, lively country, blessed with a unique landscape, unique people…and a unique beverage: the black one, the fulfilling one, the meal in a glass, THE Guinness.
I think it does, actually, truly represent the Irish people: strong, funny, colorful…and at the same time familiar…and different.

Oxygen festival ‘08. Somewhere around Baile Átha Cliath, aka Dublin. We played right after the Sugababes. Didn’t think I knew them. But, in fact, I knew half of their set. Almost by heart. The power of the radio and mass exposure, I guess.
If think that’s what’s missing a bit for dEUS in the UK and Ireland right now. Radio airplay. Press exposure. A little bit of a hype. Or just finding a way to rejuvenate an audience.

Gigs were good. T in the Park, the next day in Scotland, was great. But there was not enough audience for a band of such a caliber, a history…and present qualities as dEUS. A band that has, just to name a few, influenced the likes (and NO, it’s not a name drop thing-just a fact!) of Radiohead, Muse, Snow Patrol (all of them were to be heard on previous dEUS podcasts history, not so long ago, but mostly…in French, back then) keep searching, you can still find them somewhere on the net) and many, many others… And you’ll also hear it in the shared points of view of two eminent musicians…mostly over the British media, on this pod.

We all know the English market…is a market. In the proper and basic sense of the word. Meaning they always try to find the new blood. The hype. The face. The gossip. The anecdotic. Sometimes instead or even against any sense (and I’m not using the term judgment!) of quality.
But, a band like dEUS, has ,I think, and surely after a six year break, the right to be treated again as some sort of a newcomer. And should be much more exposed over there. Put up front. Constantly regarded as…a new comer. Exactly.

England is the country I’ve toured the most over the years, and is not always funny to be in, believe me, but I know, deep down, that songs as The Architect, Slow, Maria Schneider or Smoker’s Reflect could all be anthems in many pubs, many night clubs, many homes, many parties…if it was pushed/exposed the right way by the English media.
Because dEUS are still leaders in a way… their very own way.

Let’s keep giving good gigs, delivering great songs, let’s keep reminding them how good they are…and I’m sure it will all (and soon) come back the way it should.

No no no. No sentimentalism or « paternalism » please.
You know by now, if you’ve been following us carefully (as any human being would do for something they really find attractive, groovy, deep, funky, clever and sexy – aka a band named dEUS) the feelings, the ups and downs, the plans, the configurations, the eccentricity, the electricity, the joy and sometimes the deep downs of a life on tour.

Downs, luckily, were never based on human and/or personal crisis, but the results of touring in sometimes difficult conditions that were not always, hum, how can I say, foreseen by the management, the booking company, the crew…or the band itself. There were very few of these moments, indeed. Very.
Joys and ups, well, you were there, you shared those unique moments with us. Let’s not forget that it’s you, the audience, that allows dEUS to express themselves on stage. And gives a true meaning to it all.
As Tom said on the previous podcast, I don’t think they did any bad shows, either. I’ll go further than he does, I honestly think they still preserve and deliver the standard of quality you should expect from them. Delivering magic moments, unique ambiguity, as well as sometimes controlled chaos… and musical poetry.

But right now we’re sitting on a plane, flying over Athens, and on this one, I have a problem, and a serious one: I didn’t do any podcast over the last (and first four) festivals shows.
But, why do you make us read this then, are u gonna ask me ? And, more importantly, why didn’t you do anything ?
Hum, tough one.
Let me think.

Well, I could have gotten you some damn cool funny interviews with, for instance, our good old friend the unique Arno, when we met him in Belfort. But he had a difficult show (power broke down twice, guitarist was missing…) and I am sure we would have talked and laughed about it, in three or four different languages even, but… by the time I was done with my day job -it is still the reason I’m here, mixing the band…- he was gone.

Same story with my good friend Jim White (who I toured with briefly in the past for the cool Bill Callahan alias Smog), and currently drumming with the wonderful Chan Marshall aka Cat Power (what a beautiful gig it was, just before us, at les Eurokéennes – dear readers, tell me you agree with me on this, please). I was planning to let you enjoy his unique OZ accent, his big laughs, his views on dEUS etc… and we would have probably talked about the dirty three, of course. And, as we were due to meet Warren Ellis the next day as he was playing the Werchter festival with Grinderman, I would have asked him the same questions. And, you know, done some kind of a cross interview, if you see what I mean. And Beck. And Massive attack. And Tim Vanhamel. And all the other nice people/bands we met during the first 4 festivals we did.
But, strangely, it did not happen.

Yesterday we spent the day -under 42 degrees Celsius, the good old Greek gODS must have been happy in their gigantic dreamy tombs- at the Rockwave festival (if you follow closely you should know by now that it’s in …Athens). I wanted to interview the Gossip, but they left right after their show. Not an impressive one between us.

I was excited (and so was everybody in the band actually, we’re still music lovers who were teenagers in the mid/ end eighties) to see and interview the punk diva, the legend (and the punk picture of tits, if you remember well those days !) who is: Siouxsie…but the show was so horrible that I didn’t feel like even trying after the gig. Sorry Siouxsie, we know and greatly respect (and sometimes love) who you are but it was so pathetic… it hurt.

Same with the only original remaining Ramones, Marky Ramone (and true hero of both my kids, hey ho let’s go is the first music sentence young kids really seem to love and remember: true genius) and talk about his views on Phil Spector’s current affairs ha ha ha, his very nice spoken words, his life as a Ramone…and as a Marky Ramone, and why not as producer of the…next dEUS album ha ha ha (joke, but he was a hell of a producer in the Richard Hell/Voivoids times), etc… but again, his show was simply… the worst tribute/cover band gig of the Ramones you could think of…
Another Pathetico moment under the burning sun of the Athenian gODZ.
And the guitarist of the Offspring seems like a cool guy, as he was reading his book all day and watching every band from the stage but sorry, his music doesn’t touch me, and I didn’t really have anything to say or ask him.

And that was it. For yesterday anyway. So I hope you understand that sometimes the line up and/or the situations are not always in my favor to operate and deliver something that I think is worth it.
But I will be back in the very near future with real podcasts.
Ones that you deserve. I hope.

BUT, in the mean time, I have asked the band the permission to let you enjoy the first 20 minutes of the Werchter gig. Filmed in situ. No tricks, no big production, not edited, sound straight from the board.
A lot, of course, has been said about the gig in the local press.
I didn’t read them as we were gone the next day, but I can tell you that it was a damn good dEUS gig. A real one. Based on the most current affair: « Vantage point ».

And, NO, it wasn’t a festival pleaser gig. No, the set-list wasn’t made to get 80.000 people dance and sing along. But to listen to. To get into it. To feel the vibe and actually, well, simply and consequently: listen to the music.
Isn’t it what truly matters. Even after four days of lack of sleep, rain, sunshine, burned burgers and greasy chips for the audience? I love to think so.
And I do.

So, here you go, you have it.
Hope that the people who were there will come by sometimes and revitalize the moment.
Hope that the people who were not there will watch it, enjoy it… and get into it…and see you in another field near your Mum’s breakfast, or daddy’s car…or secret lover’s joint.

Next stop, Dublin: who knows, maybe this time they will play « Little Arithmetics ».

Then comes the riff. Then comes the drum. Then comes the vocal.
Then it happened: the living dream of a soundman I guess –ho com’on don’t push it too far- : a live impro that becomes, 2 years and a week later exactly, the first track of the new album. Judge for yourself. It’s all in here. After 25 seconds on this pod you’ll have it. Followed by the album version. Isn’t it quite unique? I love to think so.

But back then we were at the end of a two year tour. Now it is just the beginning. It sounds weird to say it after 25 gigs all over the place but it’s a fact we kept noticing while on tour: People know the album better. The new songs are better played. The gigs, also, are getting better. And as with any birth, life has a meaning to the elderly only when it comes with fresh (who said flesh?) experience. In a sense. If u know what I mean.

14.05.08: Another gig in Moscow. And a good one it was. Damn, no impro this time. I guess it will be for Bangkok. Or Vladivostok. Or Vodkadistok.
But this time we were moved to the MUCH bigger venue. About 3 times bigger. Good for 2600 people. Hum…was it too early? Was it a bit too ambitious? About one thousand Russians showed up, including the locals who are driving black Mercedes and having the full 4 course menu served on reserved tables, while « enjoying » the music. Which is, I think, really good considering where we were? But isn’t it always nicer/groovier to play in front of full houses, instead of lees then half full places ? I think you know the answer.

Caviar wasn’t on the list, and gOD how bad can the food be in this country, even a fly wouldn’t stand on it, I’m sure. But local beer, also known as Vodka, did find its way to our surroundings. And a few really nice people and bars we discovered.
It’s always cool to be ambitious. And so is dEUS.
So let’s see if we fill up the venue …at the end of this tour. To get History to repeat itself. Would be a gentle circle. Wouldn’t it?

Stockholm is actually closer to Moscow then you’d think. Geographically speaking. And maybe politically, too. Read further and you’ll know why I think so.

But between those two gigs we did a little radio show in Brussels. On a Sunday. Or was it Saturday? Went OK, anyway. Even though I had to crank it up a bit, I admit it. I don’t like to do that but hey, sometimes you got to cope with what’s coming from the stage. And lordy were they tired or…did they go out the night before? Maybe I was tired. So: loud it was. From the stage and in the venue. Maybe too loud. Sorry for the first rows. And to the lovely birds that were singing close to the venue. Enjoying the only « river » we got going through Brussels. « La seine » they dare to call it. Ha ha ha…

Karin Dreijer Andersson –from the Knife- showed up to play with us the week after. In her native country. She finally managed to find a baby-sitter…in Göteborg!
Can I take this opportunity to ask the lovely people of a beautiful country named Sweden to urge their government….to learn to chill!
Everywhere we went, it was, like, DON’T. Don’t smoke here… but there. Don’t you think you should have a glass of water? But, Mister Bouncer, I only had one glass of white wine. Go out! Don’t get into the bicycle lane…or die. Don’t ask any more questions…or I call the police.

About 400 people were at the « Debaser ». I know Tomy wasn’t happy about that. Neither was he about his sound on stage. But another good gig it was. Whatever the feelings he had. And after 9 years it seems normal to me that you have to rebuild your reputation and your place in the always evolving « market » that music has become. Com’on…even Oasis sell…2000 copies in this country. I know, we don’t like them but it’s for the numbers…only.

And thanks for the lovely day we had after. Wandering around the old city. Nice nice nice. Even the lunch we had was perfect. And with the charming company of Mauro, Alan, Fonzy and Tomy, a perfect end to the club tour « mission » was completed. I’d say. Again, reply to this pod please, if you have anything to say. Or ad, or admit, or pretend. Or think…or know.

Next round: Summer festivals. We will be coming to your town. Or country. Or village.
So get the grass ready. Put the cows in their dormitory. Or abattoir for the non veggies.

Because weather does change things. To us and the way we spend our day chatting/sunbathing on nice terraces after soundcheck. Good times to talk. To chill. To get close. To laugh.
And to you. Because it’s so much nicer to pick up your bike to go to the gig. So you can drink. So you can keep fit, too. And so we can all gather outside after the show and re-do our little but beautiful and sexy world.

Zurich has always been nice to dEUS. And this one was no different. Oh no. Great audience. Dancing kings and queens. All I could see were big smiles on everybody’s faces. Let me know if I’m wrong. Vienna was also under the sun. Windy though. And I have to say that when we arrived at the venue we were all pretty scared. What a rundown venue this is. What a winy skinny tiny stage it was. Even the mic stands were pieces of art, and gosh I love art. But on this occasion we had to be able to use them. And eventually put mics on them. So we had to replace them with basic black mic stands. Hoooo I hear the local promoter say.
Again, sorry for the artists who made them, but musical art nowadays has to be able to express itself via microphones. And cables. And amps. And speakers. We thought they didn’t know that there when we came in.

But another great and smooth gig it was. Sweaty. And groovy. Almost like a damn good white Russian. But that’s for next week.

Vienna, see you in October. I’ve been told it’s gonna take place outside. In an open air situation. gOD of good things and times, make it be a splendid sunshine, right. Deal? As cool as…

Ok, where am I, right now ? In Linz, Austria. On a sort of morning after. Not that I went partying last night -as all the band members did though, to an overcrowded cool DJ bar next to the hotel- but there was a wedding party taking place at the hotel we stayed, right above my head, right above my bed. And you could hear, feel and almost touch all of the action. Those high heels on a wooden floor. Acoustics and hotels. Damn…

Linz ? Hold on. Isn’t it close to Mauthausen ? Yes, it is. Mister Proust is doing his job today. I remember visiting the former concentration camp in this « city » when I was a teenager. Oh lord. How to describe those painful and vivid memories. I remember reading at the time that the camp commandant allowed his eleven year old son to shoot prisoners with a rifle in front of their own porch. And, man, the « wailing wall », welcome present for the prisoners who arrived there. And the chambers.

But what’s wrong today ? Did someone put a « gloom » sugar in my coffee this morning, at breakfast. I’ll have a break. Another coffee. And a smoke. And will be back.

So, this one is about Munich and Milan’s gigs. Got it ?

Munich. Nice venue, friendly people, very good gig. But, Germany, what’s happening ? We used to fill up those places with dancing chicks and drinking dudes. Aftershows and smiles on our faces. Last chance before the autumn tour at the Melt festival in Berlin, this summer. And be in the mood to celebrate, chat and dance. Please.

Milan. Magazzini Generali. Much better than it used to be. GREAT audience. Still Italy though. It’s weird to see how much they try to be as good as can be, but then those stairs in front of the stage, keeping the audience about 5 meters away from the action. It may be relevant for the bloody ( and great ) Rolling Stones stadium show. But in a club, please.

Anyway, another good gig it was. Truly. And honestly. But again, what happened to the afterparty. Com’on guys, you know we like to hang out after a show, have a few drinks and talk about stuff. Why have you got to rush home straight after the show ? Let’s get it back that way in the future. We all love it. Deal ?

So on this pod I decided to let the people coming to the shows give their point of view on the music. You’ll find a lot of little interviews from German and Italian fans, recorded before and after the gigs.

It was in Hasselt, near the city of Ambiorix and hometown of our very own Highness Mauro Pawlowski, that the first act of the 6 little meetings we also call gigs we had with Belgium, took place. A “rendez-vous” that we are about to end (and celebrate, I know it, follow my eyes) later on today at the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels. By the way, as this will only be published tomorrow, for those who were not there let me tell you that you missed a gorgeous/ cool/ sexy afterparty at the bar Le Central.

And down the Hasselt gig went. And really badly down it ended. Little technical defaults, loads of them, all put together. At the same place. And at the same time. It ended up being the worst dEUS gig I have professionally experienced. Damn, man, what a weird situation to be caught in. You’ve known the people for years, travelled the world with them, shared unique moments, winks and laughs. And ba da boom…

Damn. Let’s not even think about it anymore. You have it in this pod faced with the views of Mauro and Alan. The Gentlemen that they are.

And much more. An interview with French radio producer Bernard Lenoir, who invited dEUS for the 3rd time to play live at his radio show « The Black Sessions ». A radio show that I’ve been listening to since I was 12 or 13 and which made me, for instance, discover Jeff Buckley long before I had the chance to work for him. Followed by « Oh Your God » from the very same show.

Then you’ll have the inside view and great taste (and smells) on French music by Mauro. All included in this unusual menu.

I personally spent, oh, much more than five years of my life, almost counting day by day, on such ” celebratory ” moments. And it’s still amazing to see how different people/bands react to a given situation. Some don’t care, and are exactly what they are like at home: messy, cool, clever, sexy. Some do care, and are exactly not what they are like at home: clean, sharp, gentle. And still sexy, I guess. In a way. No names. Who cares.

This is pod two of the new dEUS Vantage Point tour. Too early to really get you into the buzz. But not too late, I hope, to make you want to know more about what’s going on. In crescendo. Still so much to come. To live through. To have fun with. And be serious about what we do at the same time.

For your personal record this one starts with a messy -I chose the effect, don’t know if the band will like it though!- a cappella version of the new song « Slow » -guess you all know it by heart by now, innit ?- recorded during soundcheck at rehearsal in Breda, Holland, on April 5th.
Following it you can enjoy the same song -in full flavor- recorded live in Mannheim, Germany, on April 10th.
You’ll then be delighted to hear a small interview with our lovely support band from Brussels, The Black Box Revelation. Followed by an extract recorded live in Amsterdam, Holland, on April 15th.
We will be ending with a beautiful acoustic version of « The Vanishing of Maria Schneider » recorded for the BBC on April 17th, live, in London. Somewhere in the city centre. To be vague enough.

952 days between the public birth of dEUS’ last album Pocket Revolution and the brand new studio album Vantage Point, which is to be released on April 21st.

554 days between that magic day of October 1st when dEUS finished their Pocket Revolution world tour in their home town Antwerp, and the first show of the brand new tour in Breda, Holland, last Sunday. Numbers both including our current sexy bissextile year for those who care… or pay attention. Because musically sexy this year sure will be. And groovy. And funky. Wait until you hear/live through it!

With a new album and tour coming up, here you go, you got it, the first one of the new series of dEUS official podcasts, straight from Stef (drums) and Mauro (guitar). And, to be honest, straight from our hearts.

There’s an interview, recorded track by track in a cosy backstage -some terrible acoustics though- just a few minutes before dEUS was about to hit the stage again and play the first notes of the new album… in front of an audience. The podcast also includes extracts of the ten new songs on Vantage Point. A teaser, so they say.

Hope you’ll enjoy it, and hope you’ll get to experience a bit what it’s like to do this wonderful job, that is to be on the road with a band like dEUS. ‘Ooooh your god’ (track two) do I hear you all say.
